Forrester’s latest report on mobile adoption in the enterprise found that 66% of employees now use two or more devices every day, including desktops, laptops, smartphones and tablets. A smaller, but notable 12% percent said they now use tablets at work. That’s still far fewer than the 50% who report only using a desktop, or the 82% who use a desktop alone or alongside other devices.

WEBINAR: Find out what users are doing on your Network

Users interact with the network in many different ways during an average day. They visit websites, send and receive email, download files from the Internet, upload photos and videos, perform online backups, and more. They can also — usually unwittingly — expose the network and themselves to intrusions, malware, viruses, phishing attacks, and other security risks.

Good visibility into user activity on your network can help you to troubleshoot problems when they arise; in many cases, it can help you to anticipate problems and prevent them from arising.

Join NetFort  on December 6th at 15:00 GMT for a webinar presented by Head of Technical Services at NetFort, Darragh Delaney that will give you valuable insight into exactly what users could be doing on your network.

During the webinar, NetFort will show you how to monitor different areas of the network including:

  • Sources of user data
  • Network traffic on the LAN and WAN
  • Internet activity
  • File shares
  • Mobile devices

Register today to reserve your seat.

Website Performance Monitoring solution that supports Sysadmins During Peak Online Shopping Season

SolarWinds, a leading provider of powerful and affordable IT management software, have recently announced enhancements to its web application monitoring product SolarWinds Web Performance Monitor (WPM), formerly known as Synthetic End User Monitor (SeUM), just in time as systems administrators prepare for increased holiday online shopping demand.

Using Web Performance Monitoring, users have been able to track the response time and health of web applications and websites to help maintain business-critical uptime. This system helps discover whether or not after making changes to their website, the right changes have been made or improvements are still required by the user in order to get to the level in which they would want their website to be at.

Web application and website performance are critical to businesses as any unplanned downtime can lead to lost productivity, dissatisfied customers, lost revenue and more. With Cyber Monday and the holidays fast approaching, IT admins are on alert considering what this means to their e-commerce business and online user experience. In a survey* SolarWinds conducted among 71 IT professionals, 42 percent deem Cyber Monday an issue that requires proactive planning and monitoring.

Whether planning for Cyber Monday, a summertime holiday promotion or a geographic expansion, sysadmins should follow these tips to help keep websites and Web applications going strong:

  1. Test the impact of changes to website from the end-user’s perspective before the big event – Set alerts and establish normal performance baselines, then monitor each crucial step of transactions to identify problems and monitor from multiple locations to make sure all are performing optimally.
  2. Ensure adequate capacity for influx of user requests – Communication among all stakeholders is essential. Talk with teams, such as marketing, to anticipate challenges from any planned activities that may drive a spike, then use monitoring systems’ historical data to do 95th percentile load planning.
  3. Monitor availability and performance of the supporting infrastructure – Monitor everything you can, including shared storage, visualisation infrastructure, database, firewall and core network components and the WAN links to the outside world, and utilise IT staff or hosting providers to ensure any problems identified by monitoring solutions are quickly resolved.

Using SolarWinds WPM, sysadmins can continuously monitor websites and Web applications, including those that are internal (behind the firewall), customer-facing, SaaS, and cloud-based to keep a proactive watch on the end user’s point of view. The latest version of WPM extends its application support to include Web-based Java applications such as Oracle forms and those served via the Citrix Web Interface.

Learn how Cheshire Constabulary polices the network with dedicated monitoring and management system

Cheshire Constabulary has adopted software from SolarWinds to monitor and track the performance of its IT systems across the county.

The police force has headquarters in Winsford, between Manchester and Liverpool, and serves almost one million people in the North West.

To get the job done there are 4,000 employees across 45 sites, responsible for law enforcement for almost one million people and, as a result, there are a lot of IT systems and a lot of room for error.

“Prior to having a dedicated monitoring and management system, we found – more often than not – that our customers told us we had IT issues before we knew,” said Chris Newton, network and storage manager for Cheshire Constabulary.

The force was originally using HP Systems Insight Manager to try to keep on top of the performance of its servers and storage deployments, with the addition of Link Analyst for watching the network. However, it felt having two separate systems made the large-scale job more difficult.

Monitoring network performance

Newton was also looking for something he considered to be “proactive”, giving the ability to see and rectify bottlenecks in the infrastructure rather than reacting to issues once they had already happened.

SolarWinds NPM Intuitive LUCID Web Interface

“We wanted to have a single product that could monitor all the different aspects of our infrastructure,” he said.

Cheshire Constabulary decided on SolarWinds’ Network Performance Monitor (NPM) tool after viewing the free online demos the company prides itself on.

Kerio Technologies Updates its UTM Security Appliance for Cloud and Virtual Networks

Kerio Technologies this week announced Kerio Control 7.4, which adds VLAN support for easier network management of cloud, virtualised, and large environments. As corporate networks become more advanced and more stressed with employees adding their own devices, IT administrators are working hard to keep their network securely behind the firewall. Kerio Control 7.4 enables network admins to use VLANs to separate a large network into smaller, isolated segments, without incorporating additional switches or routers.                                                              Click image to enlarge

“Kerio Control 7.4 comes at a time when corporate networks are going through interesting changes. Everything from virtualization and cloud, to IPv6 has an impact on security,” said James Gudeli, vice president of business development, Kerio Technologies. “We have made a great deal of investment in new features that support these advanced networks and IT environments while still meeting the needs of our legacy customers.”

As Kerio Control has diverged from its Windows software version to Linux, we have created a Hyper-V software appliance so customers in Windows invested environments can still test and deploy the Linux software appliance on the Hypervisor.

Kerio Web Filter, an optional module of Kerio Control that prevents users from visiting websites that are known to contain malicious content, has been upgraded with HTTPS and embedded URL filtering. This ensures the network is not exposed by employees using encrypted Web connections or by accessing approved sites with embedded links to view inappropriate content.

Redesigned Kerio Control Statistics

Formerly Kerio StaR, the new Kerio Control statistics interface has a fresh new look along with support for groups, user photos and better rights management for accessing statistics and email reports. Administrators now have the flexibility to specify which groups to gather statistics for, assign group statistics access to any user (a director or VP for example) regardless of their group membership, and even allow users to access their own statistics data or email reports. Imagine your teams’ productivity gains if they could see just how much of their internet activity you are monitoring. Now that’s powerful.                                            Click image to enlarge

Admin Dashboard

The admin Dashboard, which is displayed as the default “home” screen upon login, provides admins with easy access to important system and license information, system health charts, traffic charts, connection status, bandwidth utilization, top active hosts and more. The Dashboard is completely customizable using a modular “tile” concept – admins can select which tiles to display and arrange tiles as they like on the dashboard page. Admins will also appreciate the redesigned charts and the new problem/alert notifications.                                                                                                                                                                  Click image to enlarge

Other Improvements

  • Allowing of incoming IPv6 connections
  • Improved charts
  • Better notification of problems
  • NTLM improvements
