FRESH NEWS: Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.4 Beta Released

Red HatRed Hat have announced exciting news about the next beta release for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 – Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.4

The Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.4 beta release includes a broad set of updates to the existing feature set and provides rich new functionality in the areas of identity management, file system, virtualization, and storage as well as productivity tools.

Through collaboration with partners, customers and the open source community, we are committed to delivering technology that is tested and stable – including in the beta phase of development. Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.4 demonstrates this commitment and has been designed for optimized performance, stability and flexibility to cater to today’s diverse workloads running in physical, virtual and cloud environments.

Key new features and enhancement details include:

Identity Management

  • System Security Services Daemon (SSSD) enhancements improve the interoperability experience with [Microsoft Active Directory] by providing centralised identity access control for Linux/Unix clients in a heterogeneous environment.

Performance improvements with addition of Direct I/O

File system

  • pNFS (Parallel NFS) client (file layout only) remains in technology preview, however now delivers performance improvements with the addition of Direct I/O for faster data access. This drives particular performance benefits for I/O intensive use cases including database workloads.

Virtualization

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 now includes the Microsoft Hyper-V Linux drivers, which were recently accepted by the upstream Linux community, improving the overall performance of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 as a guest on Microsoft Hyper-V.
  • Installation support for VMware and Microsoft Hyper-V para-virtualization drivers. This new feature enhances the user deployment experience of Red Hat Enterprise Linux as a guest in either of these virtualization environments.
  • In this release, KVM virtualization virtio-scsi support, a new industry storage architecture, provides industry leading storage stack scalability.

Management

  • The use of swap functionality over NFS enables more efficient read/write tradeoffs between local system memory and remote disks. This capability increases performance in very large, disk-less server farms seen in ISP and Web hosting environments.
  • Enhancement in c-groups delivers the ability to migrate multi-threaded applications without errors.
  • Optimised perf tool for the latest Intel processors

Storage

  • New system log features identify mapping from block device name to physical device identifier – allowing an administrator to easily locate specific devices as needed.

Now with support for newer Wacom tablets

Productivity Tools

  • Microsoft interoperability improvements with Microsoft Exchange and calendar support in Evolution. Productivity functions, such as calendar support with alarm notification and meeting scheduling is improved.
  • Customers such as animation studios and graphic design houses now have support for the newer Wacom tablets.

Through this next beta release of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6, Red Hat is proud to deliver the highest quality open source enterprise platform. Red Hat looks to the community and their partners and customers for feedback to ensure Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.4 follows this path.

Does Open Source Hold The Keys To Innovation In Government?

A new narrative is emerging in government innovation and it goes something like this: Truly great leaps in innovation are almost never possible with monolithic, proprietary approaches to software development, and many small innovations, when taken together, often lead to large, game-changing paradigms.

That was the message delivered by both government and private sector IT professionals at the Red Hat Government Symposium on Oct. 23. The event, sponsored by Red Hat Inc. focused on the importance of transparency, open sharing, and collaboration to the success of the Obama Administration’s Open Government Initiative, as well as how open source software can help agencies accomplish their missions in a time of dwindling resources.

“When it comes to the questions of innovation, one of the most profound things that we have seen in the world of open source [software] is the power of incremental innovation versus the traditional big-bang theory of innovation,” said Michael Tiemann, vice president of Open Source Affairs at Red Hat (pictured right.)

Daman Health cuts costs and improves stability with Red Hat Enterprise Linux

Red Hat, the leading provider of open source solutions, today announced that Daman, the United Arab Emirates’ (UAE’s) first specialised national health insurance company, has significantly reduced operational costs, improved stability and reliability and simplified management of its enterprise content management application by migrating to Red Hat Enterprise Linux operating platform.

Daman handles more than 1.4 million medical claims each month, a tremendous number of requests on its underlying systems with an estimated 20 million IT related transactions daily.  To increase efficiency, improve control of information, and reduce the overall cost of information management, Daman opted for an enterprise content management application, which was deployed on a proprietary operating system. However, as the system did not integrate well with the rest of its open source IT infrastructure, the company decided to migrate to Red Hat Enterprise Linux.

The migration was fast and efficient, with little impact on regular business operations. In addition to the significant reduction in the system’s operational costs, Daman experienced a number of benefits from the migration to Red Hat Enterprise Linux. These include the standardization of systems in accordance with the organization’s long-term IT vision, ease of maintenance, and excellent stability and robustness even when dealing with large volumes of requests.

Since its establishment in the region, Daman has been a strong advocate of open source technology and has invested heavily in developing the necessary skill sets to carry out complex implementations and maintenance of such systems within the organization itself. “We prefer to opt for open source technology whenever possible and applicable. So, when undertaking new IT initiatives we evaluate the solutions which best align with this long-term IT strategy,” said Ramzi Rahal, Director of IT at Daman.  “The platform running the enterprise content management system clearly did not fit well with the rest of our IT infrastructure, so we decided to migrate this component to Red Hat Enterprise Linux.”

Rahal is particularly proud of the in-house expertise that has been developed for the integration of Red Hat solutions, stating, “The entire implementation was carried out by our own internal team and they managed it without facing any issues. This is a testament to both the skill of our engineers as well as the ease of manageability of Red Hat’s products. Even the day-to-day maintenance of these systems is easily carried out by our technical team, allowing us to run our applications with a high degree of confidence.”

The company plans to continue its collaboration with Red Hat and is currently in the process of web deployment of its core insurance application with its application servers running on Red Hat Enterprise Linux. The aim is to improve process efficiency within the organization.
