Does Open Source Hold The Keys To Innovation In Government?

A new narrative is emerging in government innovation and it goes something like this: Truly great leaps in innovation are almost never possible with monolithic, proprietary approaches to software development, and many small innovations, when taken together, often lead to large, game-changing paradigms.

That was the message delivered by both government and private sector IT professionals at the Red Hat Government Symposium on Oct. 23. The event, sponsored by Red Hat Inc. focused on the importance of transparency, open sharing, and collaboration to the success of the Obama Administration’s Open Government Initiative, as well as how open source software can help agencies accomplish their missions in a time of dwindling resources.

“When it comes to the questions of innovation, one of the most profound things that we have seen in the world of open source [software] is the power of incremental innovation versus the traditional big-bang theory of innovation,” said Michael Tiemann, vice president of Open Source Affairs at Red Hat (pictured right.)

It’s your Virtualization. Not theirs

Virtualization promises many exciting opportunities, such as the potential to enhance productivity while significantly reducing costs. These benefits can be made restricted by the use of complicated proprietary virtualization solutions. The reason for this is although the physical server count and utility costs may reduce, many of the cost benefits are neutralised by the costs applied by proprietary virtualization vendors such as those applied for the use of Virtual memory (VRAM).

Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization 3.0 is a complete virtualization management solution for servers and desktops, and the first enterprise-ready, fully Open Source virtualization platform. Whether you are new to virtualization, exploring the virtues of switching to Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization-based solutions, or are making the assessment around Red Hat as a second vendor within your virtualisation strategy, Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization 3.0 represents a true strategic alternative to organisations searching for near native levels of application performance, greater cost savings through the adoption of Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization 3.0 technology compared with other virtualisation vendors and a faster return-on investment (ROI) through the low cost subscription model with no requirement for Licensing and capital expense. All of the above benefits are underpinned with the benefits of Open Source and freedom from vendor lock-in.

Remarkably Affordable
Most proprietary vendors complicate the path to virtualization by offering multiple product editions, all with high upfront procurement costs and confusing maintenance fees. Red Hat offers a single, enterprise-ready edition of Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization 3.0, under a straightforward and affordable annual subscription model. The subscription is based on the level of support you require and entitles you to software access, product patches, upgrades and access to Red Hat’s Customer Portal. Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization 3.0 is priced on a per-socket basis (for each hypervisor) and offers the lowest TCO and fastest ROI when benchmarked against equivalent proprietary solutions: typically 60-90% less expensive.

Enterprise-ready
Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization 3.0 is an end-to-end virtualization solution, consisting of the Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization 3.0 Hypervisor, the Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization 3.0 Manager and a powerful mix of enterprise features and advanced capabilities that match and in some cases surpass those offered by proprietary virtualization solutions. Many competitor offerings are segmented into multiple product editions and require customers to buy add-on products to achieve true enterprise functionality. Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization 3.0 offers High Availability, Live Migration, industry leading Security based on SELinux security standards, an easy-to-use browser-based central management system, and a rich eco-system of certified hardware and software partners through a single product.

Fast and Scalable
The Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization 3.0 hypervisor combines the power of the Red Hat Enterprise Linux Kernel with Kernel based Virtual Machine Technology (KVM); making the Linux Kernel a high speed enterprise-ready hypervisor. Deployable as a standalone, bare-metal hypervisor, or as a standalone instance of Red Hat Enterprise Linux running as a hypervisor host, Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization 3.0 dominates the independent, industry standard benchmark for virtualization. Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization 3.0 provides great cross-platform performance, is ideal for mission-critical Microsoft Windows workloads and is the obvious choice for Linux environments.

Many organisations enter into virtualization without considering their future requirements and soon realise that scaling-up proprietary solutions can be complicated and costly. With a single enterprise-ready edition of Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization 3.0 and a subscription model that stays the same each year, Red Hat makes cost forecasting predictable and Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization 3.0 affordably scalable.

You will find the below video useful as an overview of the Red Hat Virtualization 3.0 with representatives from IBM, HP, CISCO and Intel giving their full support.

Why Choose Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization 3.0?
Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization 3.0 offers compelling value by matching the core enterprise functionality of proprietary virtualization solutions, at a price that can be up to 90% less expensive. For more information about Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization 3.0, or to discover how Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization 3.0 compares on performance and affordability when benchmarked against leading virtualization solutions.

Linux use among the world’s largest enterprises continues to grow

The Linux Foundation, in partnership with Yeoman Technology Group, recently conducted an invitation-only survey of 1893 enterprise Linux users. The survey pool was comprised of The Linux Foundation End User Council, as well as other companies, organisations and government agencies selected by The Linux Foundation and Yeoman.

A paper was published in January this year, which reported on the findings of that survey, with a focus on the 428 respondents who work for organisations with sales of more than $500 million or 500+ employees.

The survey results show that Linux use among the world’s largest enterprises continues to grow.

Eighty-four percent of respondents report that their organisations have expanded Linux usage in the last 12 months, with 82% planning on continuing that expansion into the year ahead. The 5-year outlook indicates an even longer-term commitment to the platform among 79.8% of Linux users surveyed, who say the use of Linux in their company or organisation will increase relative to other operating systems during this time period.

Who uses Linux?

Well the answer is that pretty much everyone uses Linux in one form or another. It’s embedded in everyday devices such as your phone and cash machines. Linux can be found in 75% of stock exchanges and used on 95% of Super Computers.

What’s made Linux so popular with businesses?

Stability, Scalability, Security, Cost Saving, Innovation and No Vendor Lock In.   Linux is constantly evolving and leveraging emerging technologies in the operating system space and customers get innovative features in a short span of time.  Linux operates better on large, multi-processor servers that support hundreds or even thousands of concurrent end-users.  The superior security makes Linux appealing to the growing list of organisations that have rather recently become more security-conscious. You won’t have to worry about proprietary vendor lock-in with Linux, so you won’t be operating at the mercy of a single supplier who could be forcing your costs up. This will give you the ability to make dramatic cost savings when compared to Solaris or other proprietary operating systems. What’s more, the fundamentally different Open Source development model allows you to get what they need rather than make do with what’s been given to you.
